India is the land of worshipers, as well as the land of deities, with the Hindu mythology itself boasting of having more than 33 million gods and goddesses. Festivals bring out the best in the people and they we do everything to please our gods.

Lord Ganesha is considered the supreme god of wisdom, prosperity and knowledge. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha, son of Lord Shiva, the destroyer himself.

Cities across the country decorate themselves to welcome one of the most revered gods in the Hindu civilization. Idols of Lord Ganesha are installed in each household and publically in beautifully embellished pandals. Streets roar with chants of Vedic hymns and shlokas from the scriptures.

The prayers go on for the next 10 days all throughout which people worship Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Devotees stand in front of huge, ornamented and garlanded idols of Ganesha and pray for a brighter future.

The prayer offering (Prasad) mainly consist of coconut, jaggery and modak, which is also considered to be the favorite of Lord Ganesha. The 10 days of Gnaesh Chaturthi is a gaga affair with colors flying, sweets being distributed and people paying their regards to Gajanana, another name for Lord Ganesh among his other 108 names!

Festivals in India are generally celebrated with great pomp and show as they are the symbol of India’s ancient culture and heritage. Every deity that is revered across the country teaches us the way of life, through their own life that has been elaborated in the books of virtues.

Perseverance, Duty, Forgiveness and Self-Respect are morals that we learn from the adventures for Lord Ganesha. From getting his head severed for the sake of duty to considering his parents ‘Shiva and Parvati’ to be his complete universe, Lord Ganesha imparts the greatest virtues of life to his devotees.

The day where god leaves for his home, the ‘Kailash’ finally comes as on the 10th day of the festival, idols of Lord Ganesha all across the country are immersed into the water. This might be the time that people bid adieu to their supreme but it might as well be the most celebrate evening of the puja. Thousands of people gather to say goodbye and the road are flooded with people, the sky painted with fireworks and the mood full of emotions.

People carry the idols to the shore or water bodies and on the way one can hear bursting music and witness the greatest street dance celebration. Once the water body is visible, chants of ‘Ganpati Bappa, Maurya’ fill the serene atmosphere and chanting the name of god, the idols are finally let go into the water. While the ornaments swim, the clay slowly dissolves and that is how people consider their beloved Lord Ganesha has finally reached his home and thus ends the greatest celebration and it also marks the beginning of an anxious wait, that the devotees indulge into, to meet their god again next year and years after that.
